Graphics Submission Guidelines and FTP Access Information

Online Graphics Submission

At American Printing Company, we use state-of-the-art graphics software and printing equipment. However, graphics submitted to APC must meet the following criteria to achieve the highest printing quality possible.

Software

The APC graphics department is Mac based and currently runs versions of The Adobe Suite CS2 which includes InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat. Artwork submitted by users running CS3 must be back-saved to a CS2 Adobe Interchange (.inx) file.

Graphic Guidelines

Artwork may be submitted by one of the following methods:

For press-ready layouts:
• A Press Quality PDF with guide marks (e.g, crop marks, registration marks) if applicable
• A compressed archive folder (preferably compressed with Stuffit) including the InDesign layout, all images and vector art included in the layout, and all of the fonts used. If fonts cannot be included they must be outlined.
• JPEG's may be submitted but are NOT recommended. If a JPEG is submitted it shout be 300 dpi at minimum. APC cannot be held responsible for errors if poor quality artwork is submitted

For layouts APC will design:
• Press-quality PDF's
• Adobe Illustrator .AI or .EPS files
• Adobe Photoshop .PSD files
• JPEG image files (300 dpi minimum)
• Body text (if applicable) in a Microsoft Word Document

If at all possible, please do not submit:
• Low-resolution JPEG's
• .BMP or .GIF images
• Microsoft Excel (unless press-ready)
• Microsoft Publisher
• Microsoft Powerpoint

Bleed

Images that have been printed all the way out to the edge of the page (such as magazines and posters) are considered bled images. Since printers cannot print to the edge of the page, extra space must be added to the image that extend beyond the cut line. When the document is cut, it gives the appearance that the image has been printed all the way out to the edge of the document. This extra added space is called the "bleed" Documents to be printed that bleed must extend at least 1/8th of an inch past the cut line. Text is recommended to be placed 1/4th of an inch inside the cut line.

Please see an example of the document below:
